Discover what the hotel sector in Cancun and Riviera Maya will look like in 2026 and the marketing strategies that will help hotels increase their bookings.

There was a time when opening a hotel in Cancun was almost a guarantee of occupancy. Having a good beach, decent rooms and a presence on Booking or Expedia was enough to start selling.
That Cancun no longer exists.
In 2026, tourists are still arriving. In fact, hotel occupancy in Cancun remains around 80% during much of the year, while the Riviera Maya shows similar figures, demonstrating that the destination continues to be one of the strongest in the continent.
The problem is not a lack of tourists.
The problem is that there are now many more accommodation options.
Between boutique hotels, major chains, all-inclusive resorts, luxury apartments, private villas and more than 13,000 active Airbnb properties in Cancun alone, competition has never been stronger.
And that completely changes the rules of the game.
People used to book because a hotel had five stars.
Today they book because they saw a Reel.
Because someone on TikTok showed the breakfast.
Because they found a different experience.
Because they saw what the room really looked like instead of a photo taken eight years ago.
Today's traveler buys trust.
For many years, Airbnb was described as the great threat to hotels.
The reality is different.
Today, both compete for completely different segments.
Some travelers would never trade an all-inclusive resort.
Others prefer an apartment with a kitchen so they can work for a week.
Some want privacy.
Others want activities.
The problem is not Airbnb.
The problem is offering exactly the same thing as everyone else.

It is the one that communicates best.
There are hotels worth hundreds of millions of dollars that still use outdated photography.
Abandoned social media accounts.
Videos made with a cellphone.
Instagram profiles that look like catalogs.
And then they wonder why occupancy falls.
Meanwhile, a boutique hotel with a much smaller budget generates millions of views by showing what sunrise looks like from a room or how a cocktail is prepared at sunset.
Believing that selling rooms means advertising.
No.
Selling rooms means telling stories.
People do not buy a bed.
They buy waking up to the sea.
They buy having breakfast without rushing.
They buy an empty pool at eight in the morning.
They buy the massage.
They buy the restaurant.
They buy the experience.

1. Become a Content Creator
A photo shoot every six months is not enough.
You need to generate content every week.
Reels.
TikToks.
Stories.
UGC content.
Vertical videos.
Behind-the-scenes content.
The algorithm rewards those who appear consistently.
2. Have an Identity
Many hotels look exactly the same.
The same pool.
The same hammock.
The same drone shot.
If you cover the logo, it is impossible to know which hotel is which.
The brands that perform best have personality.
A voice.
A way of speaking.
A visual style.
A story.
3. Invest in Google Before Billboards
Today, most bookings begin with a search.
"Boutique hotel Cancun."
"Romantic hotel Riviera Maya."
"Pet-friendly hotel Cancun."
If you do not appear there, you simply do not exist for thousands of travelers.
SEO, Google Business Profile and search campaigns remain some of the highest-return investments when done correctly.
4. Treat Reviews Like Campaigns
Many hotels respond to comments once a month.
Serious mistake.
Reviews sell.
Respond quickly.
Solve problems.
Say thank you.
Ask for opinions.
All of that directly influences the purchase decision.
5. Create Experiences, Not Promotions
Anyone can copy a 20% discount.
An exclusive experience cannot be copied as easily.
Mixology class.
Private dinner.
Sunrise yoga.
Guest chef.
Beach picnic.
Food tour.
That generates content.
And content generates bookings.
6. Work With Creators... But Choose Them Well
It is not about inviting influencers with millions of followers.
It is about inviting people whose audience would actually travel to the hotel.
Many times, a small content creator generates more bookings than a celebrity.
Because they have credibility.

The exact same thing is happening there.
In fact, even more so.
Today there are thousands of apartments competing with one another.
Those that survive are not necessarily the cheapest.
They are the ones that present their property best.
The ones that respond quickly.
The ones with the best photography.
The ones that build trust from the first second.
And those that understand Airbnb is no longer only an accommodation platform.
This year also presents important challenges for the destination.
Sargassum remains a factor that can affect perceptions of the Mexican Caribbean during certain months, forcing hotels and authorities to double their efforts to maintain a good visitor experience.
That means communication will be even more important.
Cancun and the Riviera Maya will continue to be leading destinations worldwide.
There will be tourists.
The real challenge will be convincing them to book with you rather than with the hotel next door.
In 2026, the winner is no longer the one with the biggest building.
It is the one that tells its story best.
Because today bookings begin long before entering Booking, Expedia or Airbnb.
They begin with a Reel, a Google search or a review.
And the hotels that understand this will be the ones that keep their rooms full in the years ahead.
